Psalms 133
Psalm 133 is a short, concise psalm written by David. It begins with the words, “How good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell together in unity.” This psalm is composed of three stanzas and sings about the value of harmony and oneness in a community. Though brief, it carries deep meaning and speaks powerfully not only to ancient Israel, but also to the way we live our lives in community today.
1verseA Song of Ascents. By David. See how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to live together in unity!
2verseIt is like the precious oil on the head, that ran down on the beard, even Aaron’s beard, that came down on the edge of his robes,
3verselike the dew of Hermon, that comes down on the hills of Zion; for there the LORD gives the blessing, even life forever more.
Structure and Flow
| Stanza 1 | It declares the goodness and beauty of the unity of brothers. |
| Stanza 2 | By comparing it to the precious oil poured on the head of the priest, it expresses unity as an overflowing blessing. |
| Stanza 3 | As the dew of Hermon falls on Mount Zion, it reveals that unity is connected to God’s blessing (life). |
The Overall Meaning
- The value of unity is highlighted as a great blessing. Beyond simple fellowship, it is regarded as a precious value—one that is likened to the anointing oil from heaven and the fresh dew.
- This psalm also suggests that, in the context of Israel—who gathered in the temple to worship—sang of the joy of integration and harmony, the community should pursue unity rather than division.
- Unity is more than agreement of feelings; it shows that it is a channel through which God’s blessing comes, connecting human relationships with spiritual blessing as one.
Points for Reflection
- Am I making an effort to achieve true unity and oneness within the community I belong to (home, faith community, friends, workplace, etc.)?
- Let’s also reflect on what “brothers dwelling together in unity” means in my life.
- Think about how much God values the unity of the community, and what kind of blessings are promised within it.
Applying It to Me
- Today, let’s check whether I am communicating with the people I meet with a warm heart, along with them.
- In the face of small misunderstandings or conflicts, decide to reach out first and actively make the joy of unity a reality.
- Along with a heart of gratitude for the community, let’s plan specifically what we can practice to build even more harmonious relationships.
