Psalms 132

Passage overview

Psalm 132 is one of the songs of ascents (pilgrim songs), and its central themes focus on King David’s covenant with God and God’s blessing concerning Zion (Jerusalem). Overall, it can be divided into two parts: in the first part (verses 1–10), there is David’s plea to remember the work he devoted himself to in order to prepare a resting place for the ark of the covenant for God and also to remember his suffering; in the second part (verses 11–18), the psalm emphasizes God’s promise to bless David and to bless Zion, highlighting the covenant God made with David.

1verseA Song of Ascents. LORD, remember David and all his affliction,

2versehow he swore to the LORD, and vowed to the Mighty One of Jacob:

3verse“Surely I will not come into the structure of my house, nor go up into my bed;

4verseI will not give sleep to my eyes, or slumber to my eyelids,

5verseuntil I find out a place for the LORD, a dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob.”

6verseBehold, we heard of it in Ephrathah. We found it in the field of Jaar.

7verse“We will go into his dwelling place. We will worship at his footstool.”

8verseArise, LORD, into your resting place, you, and the ark of your strength.

9verseLet your priests be clothed with righteousness. Let your saints shout for joy!

10verseFor your servant David’s sake, don’t turn away the face of your anointed one.

11verseThe LORD has sworn to David in truth. He will not turn from it: “I will set the fruit of your body on your throne.

12verseIf your children will keep my covenant, my testimony that I will teach them, their children also will sit on your throne forever more.”

13verseFor the LORD has chosen Zion. He has desired it for his habitation.

14verse“This is my resting place forever. I will live here, for I have desired it.

15verseI will abundantly bless her provision. I will satisfy her poor with bread.

16verseI will also clothe her priests with salvation. Her saints will shout aloud for joy.

17verseI will make the horn of David to bud there. I have ordained a lamp for my anointed.

18verseI will clothe his enemies with shame, but on himself, his crown will shine.”

Key Contents and Meaning

  • David’s devotion and God’s remembrance: The psalm recalls David’s concern to find a resting place for the ark and asks God to remember David’s hardships and devotion.
  • The centrality of Zion: Zion is presented as the place God chose for His dwelling and for the worship of the people.
  • The Davidic covenant: The psalm recalls God’s promise concerning David’s royal line and connects Zion’s blessing with God’s provision, salvation, and enduring faithfulness.

Meditation Points

  • Consider what “devotion” and “remembrance” mean in our relationship with God.
  • You can also think about where the center of today’s faith community is, and what “Zion” is—both as a place and as a heart—for us.
  • Pay attention to the fact that God’s promises are true and do not change even with the passage of time.

Applying It to Myself

  • Reflect on what, in my life, the heart and priorities are for preparing a place where God will dwell.
  • Find a part where you can testify in your own life about how God’s grace and faithfulness were revealed in the midst of past devotion and suffering.
  • Let’s practice in everyday life an attitude of trust and waiting that holds on to God’s promises.
