Psalms 134

Passage overview

Psalm 134 is the final Song of Ascents and consists of only three verses. It appears to be a brief liturgical exchange: worshipers call on those who serve in the house of the LORD by night to bless the LORD, and a blessing is then pronounced from Zion.

The psalm can be read in two movements: an exhortation to bless the LORD (verses 1–2) and a blessing from the LORD, Maker of heaven and earth (verse 3). Its focus is mutual encouragement in worship and the recognition that blessing ultimately comes from God.

1verseA Song of Ascents. Look! Praise the LORD, all you servants of the LORD, who stand by night in the LORD’s house!

2verseLift up your hands in the sanctuary. Praise the LORD!

3verseMay the LORD bless you from Zion, even he who made heaven and earth.

The Flow and Structure of the Text

  • Verses 1–2: The worshipers address the servants of the LORD who stand by night in the house of the LORD and urge them to bless the LORD and lift their hands in worship.
  • Verse 3: A blessing is pronounced from Zion: may the LORD, Maker of heaven and earth, bless the worshiper. The verse shifts the focus from human praise to the blessing that comes from God.

Overall Meaning and Message
