Psalms 101

Passage overview

Psalm 101 is classified as a psalm of David, a song of resolve in which the king pledges a life and rule that are right before God. Overall, it is composed of praise to God (v. 1), declarations of commitment, and a determination to keep justice and integrity within the community (vv. 2–8).

  • Verse 1: It proclaims that it will sing of God’s loving kindness and justice and praise Him.
  • Verses 2–4: David promises to keep integrity in his own heart and household. He resolves not to set wicked things before his eyes and to stay far from crooked conduct.
  • Verses 5–8: David’s determination is revealed to root out evil and falsehood in his house and nation, and to keep only honest people close to him.

1verseA Psalm by David. I will sing of loving kindness and justice. To you, LORD, I will sing praises.

2verseI will be careful to live a blameless life. When will you come to me? I will walk within my house with a blameless heart.

3verseI will set no vile thing before my eyes. I hate the deeds of faithless men. They will not cling to me.

4verseA perverse heart will be far from me. I will have nothing to do with evil.

5verseI will silence whoever secretly slanders his neighbor. I won’t tolerate one who is arrogant and conceited.

6verseMy eyes will be on the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with me. He who walks in a perfect way, he will serve me.

7verseHe who practices deceit won’t dwell within my house. He who speaks falsehood won’t be established before my eyes.

8verseMorning by morning, I will destroy all the wicked of the land, to cut off all the workers of iniquity from the LORD’s city.

Theme and Overall Meaning

This psalm emphasizes that from a person’s private sphere (the heart and the household) to social responsibility (the nation and the community), one must pursue righteousness before God.
In particular, through the firm resolve not to tolerate wrongdoing and the determination to stand alongside those who are faithful and honest, it shows the moral standards and sense of responsibility that a leader should have. It also invites readers today to examine their own conduct day by day and to aim for integrity.

Meditation Points

  • Am I keeping honesty and integrity in my heart, my home, and my community?
  • As David did, do I have specific resolve to keep evil at a distance and draw near to what is good in my words, actions, and relationships?

Try Applying It to Yourself

  • From small things and from quiet, private places, choose one thing you can practice honesty in today.
  • So that my words and conduct can have a good influence on the community, deliberately choose fellowship with faithful people even more.
