Psalms 100

Passage overview

Psalm 100 is a short but powerful hymn of praise, entirely made up of a call to worship God. Traditionally classified as a “psalm of thanksgiving,” it invites the whole earth and all peoples to worship God together. This psalm has a beautiful structure that conveys, in a simple way, the attitude and reasons for worship.

1verseA Psalm of thanksgiving. Shout for joy to the LORD, all you lands!

2verseServe the LORD with gladness. Come before his presence with singing.

3verseKnow that the LORD, he is God. It is he who has made us, and we are his. We are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

4verseEnter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise. Give thanks to him, and bless his name.

5verseFor the LORD is good. His loving kindness endures forever, his faithfulness to all generations.

Structure and Flow

This psalm can be divided into two main parts. The first part (verses 1–2) is a call to worship and an exhortation to come to God with joy. The second part (verses 3–5) explains why we should do so, giving reasons based on God’s attributes and what he has done.

  • Verses 1–2: an invitation to serve the LORD with shouts of joy, sing, and come into his presence.
  • Verse 3: an exhortation to recognize that God is our Creator and that we are his people.
  • Verses 4–5: It concludes by declaring that we must enter his gates with thanksgiving and praise, and by proclaiming his goodness, his steadfast love, and his faithfulness.

The Overall Meaning

Psalm 100 shows that the essence of worship lies not in outward actions, but in a deep awareness of God and thanksgiving toward him. It emphasizes worship as a place anyone can participate in and that is open to everyone. The truth that God is good, that his steadfast love endures forever, and that his faithfulness continues from generation to generation is the greatest comfort and hope this psalm gives to its readers.
