Passage overview

Psalm 97 is a psalm that proclaims God as the King of all the earth and sings about God’s rule, the joy that comes from it, and the righteous judgment of the LORD. This chapter emphasizes God’s majesty and justice, as well as the joy and peace given to those who rely on Him. The psalmist describes how nature and the nations respond when the LORD reigns, showing the wide-ranging impact of God’s rule on all things.

1verseThe LORD reigns! Let the earth rejoice! Let the multitude of islands be glad!

2verseClouds and darkness are around him. Righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.

3verseA fire goes before him, and burns up his adversaries on every side.

4verseHis lightning lights up the world. The earth sees, and trembles.

5verseThe mountains melt like wax at the presence of the LORD, at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.

6verseThe heavens declare his righteousness. All the peoples have seen his glory.

7verseLet all them be shamed who serve engraved images, who boast in their idols. Worship him, all you gods!

8verseZion heard and was glad. The daughters of Judah rejoiced because of your judgments, LORD.

9verseFor you, LORD, are most high above all the earth. You are exalted far above all gods.

10verseYou who love the LORD, hate evil! He preserves the souls of his saints. He delivers them out of the hand of the wicked.

11verseLight is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart.

12verseBe glad in the LORD, you righteous people! Give thanks to his holy Name.

Structure and Flow

  • Verses 1–2: The Lord’s reign is proclaimed, and it is emphasized that clouds and darkness surround Him, and that righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne.
  • Verses 3–6: A picture is presented of the whole earth fearing before God, even as nature itself responds to His power. Through fire and lightning, and mountains melting in the presence of the LORD, God’s majesty is revealed.
  • Verses 7–9: A contrast is made between idol worshipers and the fact that the LORD alone is the true God. It declares that all the gods bow down before God, who is exalted above all nations.
  • Verses 10–12: There are exhortations and promises given to the righteous. The psalm proclaims that those who are upright hate evil, and that light and joy are for the righteous. It urges readers to remember God’s holiness and respond with thanksgiving and joy.

Overall Meaning

This psalm proclaims that God is not only the God of Israel, but the one who has sovereignty over the whole world, nature, and every nation and people. God’s reign is always righteous and just, and His sovereignty is higher than any idol or any power of the world. In this way, the psalm sings that the whole world should rejoice in and revere Him, because God’s presence and authority reach over every part of our lives and over all history in the world.
