Psalms 84

Passage overview

Psalm 84 is a poem that expresses the heart of a worshipper on a pilgrimage to the sanctuary. It sings of the blessing of staying in the house of God and the longing for it. It is divided into three parts: verses 1–4 sing the blessedness of those who dwell in the LORD’s house, while verses 5–7 describe the pilgrim’s journey up to Zion and the grace that meets them along the way. In verses 8–12, it brings prayers to God and confesses true happiness that comes through an intimate fellowship with Him.

1verseFor the Chief Musician. On an instrument of Gath. A Psalm by the sons of Korah. How lovely are your dwellings, LORD of Armies!

2verseMy soul longs, and even faints for the courts of the LORD. My heart and my flesh cry out for the living God.

3verseYes, the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may have her young, near your altars, LORD of Armies, my King, and my God.

4verseBlessed are those who dwell in your house. They are always praising you. Selah.

5verseBlessed are those whose strength is in you, who have set their hearts on a pilgrimage.

6versePassing through the valley of Weeping, they make it a place of springs. Yes, the autumn rain covers it with blessings.

7verseThey go from strength to strength. Every one of them appears before God in Zion.

8verseLORD, God of Armies, hear my prayer. Listen, God of Jacob. Selah.

9verseBehold, God our shield, look at the face of your anointed.

10verseFor a day in your courts is better than a thousand. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.

11verseFor the LORD God is a sun and a shield. The LORD will give grace and glory. He withholds no good thing from those who walk blamelessly.

12verseLORD of Armies, blessed is the man who trusts in you.

The Flow of the Passage

  • Verses 1–4: The psalmist yearns for God’s temple—namely, the place where the LORD dwells. Even sparrows and swallows are portrayed as longing for rest in God’s house, and the psalm celebrates the good fortune of those who live in the LORD’s house.
  • Verses 5–7: It highlights the strength and courage of those who set out on the pilgrimage toward Zion. Even in life’s hardships—such as the “valley of tears”—it declares that they walk a blessed path because of the strength and grace God provides.
  • Verses 8–12: They approach God through prayer and confess that the LORD’s presence is more precious than anything in the world. The psalm ends with the confession that those who trust in God are blessed.

The Key Meaning of Psalm 84

In this psalm, “the house of God” is not presented as a mere building, but as a place of God’s presence and intimate fellowship. It emphasizes that joy, strength, safety, and hope all come from God. The sanctuary is a place to meet God, find rest, and receive a supply of new strength.

Meditation Points

  • What are the priorities in my life, and how precious is fellowship with God to me?
  • I reflect on whether I also have “a heart that longs for the house of God,” and whether I keep the LORD at the center of my everyday life.
  • When I walk a difficult and challenging journey like a pilgrim, I meditate on how much I seek and long for God’s presence and comfort.

Applying It to Me

  • Let’s value the time of meeting God and worship, and let’s strive to experience God’s presence in my daily life.
  • Even amid life’s difficulties, let’s look up and focus on God’s house and His presence, and let’s live a life in which we ask the LORD for strength in each day’s journey.
