The Flow and Characteristics of the Text
This psalm begins with a plea for deliverance (verse 1), then moves to the crisis the psalmist is facing and the threats posed by adversaries (verses 2–3), and finally to the hope of those who trust in God (verse 4). In conclusion, the psalmist admits his own weakness while once again confessing and urging that only God is the Savior (verse 5). Within the short text, fear and hope, pleas and praise appear condensed.
Reflection Points from a Literary and Theological Perspective
- Although Psalm 70 is brief, it contains the courage and trust to ask God directly for help in the midst of suffering.
- It teaches anyone the freedom to seek God at every moment and to cry out, even in injustice and darkness.
- It also helps us to recognize that, without hiding our weakness, we can confirm that God alone is the true refuge and Savior.
Try Applying It to Yourself
- In moments of difficulty or crisis, instead of trying to hold on by my own strength, let’s summon the courage to seek God directly and honestly for the touch of deliverance, just like the psalmist.
- Rather than being ashamed of my weakness, I can reveal it before God and, by expecting His help, I can discover true hope.
- Today as well, trust in God’s swift response, and pour out your heart in prayer so that you can live a life that rejoices in salvation.
