Psalms 63

Passage overview

Psalm 63 is a psalm that David wrote while longing for God in the wilderness. This chapter sings of David’s deep desire for God, his trust amid difficult circumstances, and the joy he experiences because of God. The psalm’s main flow begins with spiritual longing like intense thirst and ultimately ends with praise to God.

1verseA Psalm by David, when he was in the desert of Judah. God, you are my God. I will earnestly seek you. My soul thirsts for you. My flesh longs for you, in a dry and weary land, where there is no water.

2verseSo I have seen you in the sanctuary, watching your power and your glory.

3verseBecause your loving kindness is better than life, my lips shall praise you.

4verseSo I will bless you while I live. I will lift up my hands in your name.

5verseMy soul shall be satisfied as with the richest food. My mouth shall praise you with joyful lips,

6versewhen I remember you on my bed, and think about you in the night watches.

7verseFor you have been my help. I will rejoice in the shadow of your wings.

8verseMy soul stays close to you. Your right hand holds me up.

9verseBut those who seek my soul to destroy it shall go into the lower parts of the earth.

10verseThey shall be given over to the power of the sword. They shall be jackal food.

11verseBut the king shall rejoice in God. Everyone who swears by him will praise him, for the mouth of those who speak lies shall be silenced.

The Central Message of the Text

This psalm compares inner thirst and longing, showing that the fundamental spiritual longing of human beings can be filled only by God. Even in the barren and difficult environment of the wilderness, David enjoys closeness with God and confesses that His love (kindness/hesed) is more precious than life. When God’s care and guidance come to mind, fear and anxiety are transformed into trust and praise.

Points to Reflect On

  • When I feel the thirst and longing of life, take a moment to reflect on who it is that I truly need to seek.
  • Let’s think about how the time in the wilderness (tests and hardships) can become an opportunity for us to draw closer to God.
  • Look back on how God’s kindness is being experienced specifically in my life.

Applying It to Me

  • Let’s check how much time there is in my everyday life for me to look for God and to long for Him.
  • In various difficult situations, practice an attitude of trusting in God and praising Him.
  • Find life’s priorities in gratitude and praise, and make a decision to enjoy joy in God today as well.
