Psalms 61

Passage overview

Psalm 61 is traditionally known as a psalm of David. This psalm is divided into two main parts. The first part (verses 1-4) contains a fervent prayer toward God, a plea for refuge, and the psalmist’s supplication, while the second part (verses 5-8) includes confidence that the prayer will be answered and a vow of praise. In his weakness and in the midst of crisis, the poet cries out to God, confessing that only God is the source of everlasting protection and refuge.

1verseFor the Chief Musician. For a stringed instrument. By David. Hear my cry, God. Listen to my prayer.

2verseFrom the end of the earth, I will call to you when my heart is overwhelmed. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

3verseFor you have been a refuge for me, a strong tower from the enemy.

4verseI will dwell in your tent forever. I will take refuge in the shelter of your wings. Selah.

5verseFor you, God, have heard my vows. You have given me the heritage of those who fear your name.

6verseYou will prolong the king’s life. His years will be for generations.

7verseHe shall be enthroned in God’s presence forever. Appoint your loving kindness and truth, that they may preserve him.

8verseSo I will sing praise to your name forever, that I may fulfill my vows daily.

The Flow of the Poem and Its Core Message

  • Verses 1-2: The psalmist urges God to hear his voice from afar. The confession, “When my heart grows weak, I will go to You,” reveals human frailty and urgency.
  • Verses 3-4: God is expressed through images such as “my rock,” “a strong tower,” and “staying forever in the shelter/booth.” The psalm continues with an appeal that trusts in God’s character as the one who protects and desires to live under His wings.
  • Verses 5-7: He declares with assurance that God has heard his prayer, and that God will grant an inheritance to those who fear Him and protect the king’s life. This shows confidence in God’s faithful promises and His protection.
  • Verse 8: The psalmist concludes the poem with a determination to praise God and keep his vows, believing that he will receive an answer.

Meditation Points

  • Let’s take a moment to check on whom I rely when I’m facing hardship and fear.
  • Let’s meditate on whether we can also confess that God is always our rock and refuge.
  • Let’s learn an attitude of giving thanks and praise to God even before we receive an answer, just as the psalm writer did.

Try Applying It to Me

  • When I feel anxiety and weakness in life, let me think about how I respond.
  • While trusting in God’s protection and guidance, let’s practice small acts of gratitude and praise in everyday life.
  • Let’s write down and put into practice what prayer and vows I can offer to God today.
