Psalms 46
Psalm 46 is a song by the descendants of Korah, beginning with a confession of faith that God becomes a refuge in times of crisis. Overall, it can be divided into three parts. The first (verses 1–3) sings of faith that will not be shaken even amid fear like natural disasters. The second (verses 4–7) emphasizes peace by using as an image the flowing waters from the city where God dwells. The final (verses 8–11) declares that God governs peace even amid war and chaos.

2verseTherefore we won’t be afraid, though the earth changes, though the mountains are shaken into the heart of the seas;
3versethough its waters roar and are troubled, though the mountains tremble with their swelling. Selah.
4verseThere is a river, the streams of which make the city of God glad, the holy place of the tents of the Most High.
5verseGod is within her. She shall not be moved. God will help her at dawn.
6verseThe nations raged. The kingdoms were moved. He lifted his voice and the earth melted.

9verseHe makes wars cease to the end of the earth. He breaks the bow, and shatters the spear. He burns the chariots in the fire.

11verseThe LORD of Armies is with us. The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.
Key Themes and Meaning
- God’s Presence: It proclaims that God is with us even in difficulties, becoming our refuge and strength.
- Overcoming Fear: A message repeats that even the turmoil of nature or the noise of the world cannot shake the faith of the steadfast, and it encourages courage in the face of every crisis.
- Ruler of Peace: Even if the world is unstable, God is described as the One who brings wars to an end and grants ultimate peace.
Meditation Points
- When you find yourself in uncertain or fearful circumstances, you can ask, "Who is my refuge".
- Reflect on where the ultimate sense of safety and peace you can rely on comes from.
- From God’s words, "Be still, and know that I am God" (verse 10), you can take in the meaning of trust and waiting.
Try Applying It to Yourself
Amid the many challenges and anxieties of life, ask yourself whether I, too, like the psalmist, am making God my practical refuge and strength. When you get swept up in worry and fear, you can try today the small practice
of trusting God in the circumstances you are given and enjoying peace.
