Psalms 103
Psalm 103 is a psalm written by David, a song of praise and thanksgiving to God. It has a structure that begins with personal praise and expands to the praise of the Israelite community, and ultimately to all of creation. Emphasizing the abundant grace and compassion, as well as God’s everlasting love, it encourages us to reflect on the need for our lives to be transformed based on His mercy.
1verseBy David. Praise the LORD, my soul! All that is within me, praise his holy name!
2versePraise the LORD, my soul, and don’t forget all his benefits,
3versewho forgives all your sins, who heals all your diseases,
4versewho redeems your life from destruction, who crowns you with loving kindness and tender mercies,
5versewho satisfies your desire with good things, so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.
6verseThe LORD executes righteous acts, and justice for all who are oppressed.
7verseHe made known his ways to Moses, his deeds to the children of Israel.
8verseThe LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness.
9verseHe will not always accuse; neither will he stay angry forever.
10verseHe has not dealt with us according to our sins, nor repaid us for our iniquities.
11verseFor as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is his loving kindness toward those who fear him.
12verseAs far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.
13verseLike a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him.
14verseFor he knows how we are made. He remembers that we are dust.
15verseAs for man, his days are like grass. As a flower of the field, so he flourishes.
16verseFor the wind passes over it, and it is gone. Its place remembers it no more.
17verseBut the LORD’s loving kindness is from everlasting to everlasting with those who fear him, his righteousness to children’s children,
18verseto those who keep his covenant, to those who remember to obey his precepts.
19verseThe LORD has established his throne in the heavens. His kingdom rules over all.
20versePraise the LORD, you angels of his, who are mighty in strength, who fulfill his word, obeying the voice of his word.
21versePraise the LORD, all you armies of his, you servants of his, who do his pleasure.
22versePraise the LORD, all you works of his, in all places of his dominion. Praise the LORD, my soul!
Structure and Flow
- Verses 1-5: The psalmist encourages his own soul, remembers all of God’s benefits, and offers praise. He confesses God personally as the One who forgives sins, heals diseases, and renews life.
- Verses 6-14: Recognizing God’s righteousness and compassion, along with human weakness, he recalls the merciful actions God has taken for us. By mentioning the history God carried out for Moses and the people of Israel, he sheds light on God’s very nature.
- Verses 15-18: Human life is like grass, but he declares that God’s steadfast love and righteousness extend to those who fear Him forever. A contrast is drawn between the finiteness of life and the eternity of God.
- Verses 19-22: The psalm ends with an ultimate cosmic expansion in which everything—from heavenly beings to all things—offers praise under God’s rule.
